ALGIERS- Algeria and the European Union agreed to set up a security dialogue mechanism for counterterrorism as part of bilateral cooperation announced Sunday, in Algiers, the minister of Maghreb Affairs,
African Union and the Arab League Abdelkader Messahel at the end of his discussions with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.
“We agreed to set up a mechanism for dialogue, security and counterterrorism between Algeria and the European Union just like what we have with our partners worldwide,” Messahel told the press, in the presence of Mogherini.
Messahel said that “the setting up of this mechanism shows the broadening of cooperation between the two sides,” recalling, in this regard, the existence of this dialogue which is expanding more every day.
For her part, Mogherini praised the Algerian model in terms of counterterrorism and said that “the European Union follows it with a lot of attention to manage the security situation.”
“We have had detailed discussions particularly concerning the regional crises on which we are working together. The European Union works very well with Algeria especially on issues that worry us the most namely security, the region’s stability and de-radicalization and the fight against terrorism,” said the European head of diplomacy.
During their meeting, extended to members of both delegations, the two officials also broached the migratory phenomenon which, she said, is “global, and does not concern only Europe but the whole region,” and on which “we will continue to work together in a spirit of partnership and bilateral cooperation,” said the European official.
Concerning the current situation in Libya, Mogherini assured that “the European Union shares the same approach as Algeria, that of finding a solution on the basis of a political agreement with the participation of all Libyans.”
Federica Mogherini started, Saturday, an official two-day visit to Algeria.
