NEW YORK-Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel held talks in New York with President and CEO of the International Crisis Group (ICG), Robert Malley, on the sidelines of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The talks focused on the situation in the Sahelo-Saharan region, notably the crisis in Mali, Libya and Western Sahara.
In this connection, Messahel reiterated Algeria’s “position in favor of political solutions based on dialogue and national reconciliation, without foreign interference and under respect for the sovereignty and integrity of States and peoples’ willingness.”
The FM emphasized Algeria’s efforts “to support stakeholders in Libya and Mali to engage in inclusive dialogue and national reconciliation.”
As for Western Sahara, Messahel reiterated Algeria’s position as a neighbouring country in favour of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination in accordance with the UN’s relevant resolutions.
Algeria also supports the UN personal envoy for Western Sahara, stressed the FM.
Messahel dubbed Algeria’s experience in de-radicalization and the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, “an experience widely solicited at the international level nowadays.”
Finally, the FM recalled the Algerian initiative which made May 16 of every year the International Day of Living together in Peace, “an initiative that is in line with Algeria’s constant commitment in favor of peace and international security.”
