GENEVA- The progress made by Algeria in terms of promoting and protecting human rights was highlighted by Secretary General of Foreign Affairs Ministry Noureddine Ayadi in the 37th session of UN Human Rights Council,
held Wednesday in Geneva.
“The evaluation of the progress made in the promotion and protection of human rights and the challenges facing our countries, leads me to broach the progress achieved by Algeria, which, as you know, has honored its commitment by presenting last May its 3rd report before the peer review mechanism,” said Ayadi who is leading the Algerian delegation to the works of this session which started on Monday.
He affirmed that “this evaluation was productive as it allowed us to have an update on the commitments made in 2012,” adding that “the nearly all commitments were accepted and Algeria is working, through the strengthening of the democratic process, to achieve all the recommendations, except the ones that are not in line with the Constitution of the country, with the sovereign choices of the Algerian people and the values of the Algerian society.”
“We are currently continuing the legislative reform consecutive to the constitutional revision, in order to adapt it to our legal arsenal on the freedom of organizing associations, meetings and demonstrations as well as the freedom of expression and opinion, participatory democracy in addition to the local governance through amendments to the provincial and communal codes,” he added.
He affirmed that broadened consultations, involving all the players including civil society, allowed implementing legislations of the Constitutional revision of February 2016 and allowed the adoption of several laws.
It is about, he added, the law on the organization and functioning of the Parliament’s two chambers and their relation with the government, the organic law relating to the Higher Independent Authority for Election Monitoring, the law on the electoral regime, the law instituting the National Council of Human Rights and the law amending the criminal procedure code and the penal code.
The Algerian diplomat said that he broached these laws to underline “the irreversibility of the democratic process, the pluralistic option and of the participatory initiative that the State is undertaking, under the leadership of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.”
