ALGIERS- Algeria described the unilateral decision of Gambia’s government to open a consular representation in Dakhla, an occupied city of Western Sahara as a “violation” of the international law,
in a communiqué released Wednesday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Gambia’s decision is a flagrant violation of the international law standards, of decisions and relevant resolutions of the Security Council and of the United Nations General Assembly relating to the issue of Western Sahara, just as it infringes the foundations of the relations between the African countries, particularly regarding the commitment and defense in all circumstances of the rules and principles enshrined in the constitutive Act of the African Union,” said the source.
After pointing out that Algeria has taken note of “the unilateral decision of Gambia’s government to open a consular representation in Dakhla, occupied city of Western Sahara,” the text added that “this provocative act which aims at undermining the settlement process of Western Sahara’s issue conducted under the aegis of the United Nations, infringes the rules and principles governing the status of the Non-Self-Governing territories and the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, in accordance with the doctrine and practices of the United Nations and the African Union.”
“This unilateral initiative can neither question nor hinder the ongoing decolonization process of Western Sahara,” concluded the source.
