ALGIERS-Algeria is a “strongly involved” country in promoting peace and security in the Sahel region, including Mali and Libya, Secretary General of the Niger Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, African Integration and Niger community abroad Sani Ibrahim Abani stressed Sunday in Algiers.
In a statement to the press after his meeting with Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry Abdelhamid Senouci Bereksi, Sani Abani welcomed the involvement of Algeria in restoring peace and security in Mali crowned by the signing of the peace and reconciliation agreement, and its contribution to seeking a definitive solution to the Libyan crisis.
The Niger official said talks with his Algerian counterpart allowed to review the state of bilateral cooperation, noting that the visit made in January by President of Niger (Mahamadou Issoufou) to Algeria allowed him to have “fruitful discussions” with President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
The two presidents agreed to “boost bilateral cooperation, which has a huge potential,” he added.
Sani Abani also said he discussed with Senouci Bereksi cooperation in teaching and education, praising the experience of Algeria in this area, as it has “the largest contingent of Niger students abroad,” he said.
“We also discussed three major projects, namely the Algerian-Niger pipeline, the Trans-Saharan and optic fibres,” he added.
In response to a question on the threat of terrorist group “Boko Haram” in the region, he noted that Niger “was committed with the countries of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) to eradicating the abject +Boko Haram+ sect.”
“The Heads of State of the LCBC are putting together a force whose mission is to permanently neutralize this (Boko Haram),” he said, while hailing Algeria’s “solidarity with countries in the region.”
