ALGIERS- Algeria requested from the UN Green Climate Fund to allocate a US $ 50 million funding for an integrated project ailing at restoring land in the arid and semi-arid areas near the Green Dam,
said Tuesday in Algiers Head of the General Directorate of Forests, Azzedine Sekrane.
“The General Directorate of Forests (DGF) presented a project about the Green Dam, which may be funded by the UN Green Climate Fund,” he said at a national consultation workshop on the rehabilitation of the Green Dam.
The five-year project is meant to prevent, reduce and reverse desertification and land degradation, mitigate the effects of drought in affected areas, by improving the resilience of human and environmental systems in the zone near the Green Dam, through sustainable management and rehabilitation of forests and pastures.
Out of the $ 50 million budget requested by Algeria, a share of $ 20 million will be allocated to the restoration of the affected ecosystems, with a focus on resilient indigenous species. $ 20 million will be used to improve the management of vulnerable zones to prevent desertification and $5 million for the establishment of a monitoring system of climate change impacts.
The remaining $5 million will be used to strengthen foresight and research, to develop smallholder activities and support green and blue businesses to ensure sustainable responses to climate change.
The project’s intervention zone covers the 10 provinces of the Green Dam, making up the bulk of the country’s arid and semi-arid zones.
