ALGIERS- Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel has received, Monday in Algiers, United States Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs, who is on a working visit to Algeria, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.
During the discussions, which focused mainly on regional issues and international security, Messahel reiterated Algeria’s position on the fight against terrorism, underlining the need to include it within the United Nations strategy with common and shared objectives,” said the statement.
The minister explained that the strategy calls for “continued adaptation” by the international community to address the threats caused by this scourge around the world.
As regards the crisis in Libya, Messahel reaffirmed “Algeria’s constant support to the UN-sponsored process for a political solution through the urgent formation of a national unity government in Tripoli capable of managing the transition and addressing the political, security and economic challenges and fighting against terrorism, which is facing the neighbouring country, Libya,” said the statement.
In this regard, “he warned against the consequences that the absence of final solution in the country would have on the security and stability in the entire region,” added the statement.
While sharing the Algerian approach on issues discussed, Shannon Thomas has reiterated the importance attached by the United States to the regular consultation with Algeria, which is an “important partner.”
He also underlined its positive role in the resolution of crises and conflicts in the region, as well as in the global fight against terrorism, said the Ministry’s statement.
The two sides agreed to “continue and deepen consultation” on issues addressed during the discussions within the framework of bilateral institutional mechanisms and international forums, concluded the statement.
