ALGIERS- Algeria is a reliable partner for the European Union (EU) in the field of energy, said Monday, in Algiers, European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Canete,
affirming that EU wants to work with Algeria to develop cooperation in this field.
“For EU, Algeria is a reliable partner in the sector of energy. It is an energy supplier (…) and we want to work together to develop our strategic partnership,” Canete told the press following his meeting with Minister of Energy Salah Khebri, held on the eve of Algeria-EU business forum in the field of energy.
“Algeria’s position as a reliable partner of EU is in our interest and we know the common challenges to be improved,” said Canete.
This includes notably, he added, the field of gas where the two sides want to increase upstream investments so that “Algeria strengthens its position among Europe’s main suppliers.”
In terms of renewable energies, where the country possesses huge solar and windmill resources, EU will support the measures taken by Algeria in terms of energy efficiency.
EU is ready to work with Algeria to take up all these common challenges and open new chapter in the Algerian-European relations in energy, according to Canete.
In this regard, a business forum devoted mainly to the sector of energy will be held Tuesday in Algiers with the participation of many European companies, showing the two sides’ willingness to strengthen the bilateral energy cooperation, said the European Commissioner.
“I hope (during the forum) that we will have a very clear dialogue between the European companies, Algerian companies, European Commission and Algerian government,” he said.
For his part, Minister of Energy said that many fields may be the subject of partnership between Algeria and EU, including hydrocarbons and gas by developing exports and production.
“We are interested in all the requests and we will try to address the constraints and obstacles (in these sectors) facing the European companies to improve the business climate,” said Khebri.
