ALGIERS- Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel has reaffirmed, Thursday in Algiers, Algeria’s approach to the crisis in Libya, based on “a political solution, dialogue and national reconciliation.”
In a statement to the press following his discussions with the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Representative for Libya and head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Martin Kobler, Messahel said that they focused on the situation in Libya and the forthcoming meetings, especially the meeting of Niamey (Niger), scheduled for 19 October.
The discussions were also an opportunity to reaffirm “Algeria’s approach to the resolution of the crisis in Libya based on a political solution, dialogue and national reconciliation,” he added.
The minister said that there were some signs that “give us grounds for optimism about the hope of all the parties with whom we are in contact to engage into national dialogue, an inter-Libyan dialogue and in Libya without any foreign interference.”
“Libyan people can resolve their problems through a genuine dialogue without any foreign interference,” he stressed.
In this regard, Messahel recalled the visit of Libya’s Chairman of the Presidential Council Fayez al-Sarraj to Algeria, during which he underlined the importance of the issue, adding that all other Libyan parties “support the idea of dialogue, because it is the only means to achieve national reconciliation and preserve the unity and the sovereignty of the Libyan people.”
Messahel alos underlined the importance of the 9th meeting of Libya’s neighbouring countries, to take place in Niger.
It will address security issues and terrorism, in addition to illegal migration and organized crime, he added.
