ALGIERS- Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel reiterated Thursday Algiers, Algeria’s commitment to support the Sahel countries in the fight against terrorism and transnational organized crime.
“I reiterate my country commitment to support the Sahel neighboring region in its fight against terrorism and transnational organized crime, based on the conviction that our security is indivisible,” said Messahel in his speech at the Expert Workshop on the “role of criminal justice in the fight against terrorism in the Sahel” organized by the Working Groups on building capacity of countries in the Sahel region.
Algeria is home to a two day workshop on the role of criminal justice to combat terrorism within the framework of its participation in the Global Forum to Fight against Terrorism (GCTF), of which it is founding member, co-chaired with Canada.
“As a founding member of the Forum and co-chair of its working group, Algeria is working hard so that instance mobilizes synergies and resources that can contribute to stability and serenity in the region,” he said.
Messahel reiterated that the terrorist threat in the Sahel is increasing with the continuous expansion of the circle of the criminal activities, adding that it is amplified by several factors notably “the immensity of sparsely populated territories, porous borders and lack of resources faced by the concerned countries.”
On this occasion, he emphasized the great importance attached by Algeria, through the organization of this workshop, to the fighting aspects that terrorism and its sponsors require from the Sahel countries and the urgent needs, especially Rule of Law must remain the rule in the fight against terrorism.
