ALGIERS- Foreign Minister, Sabri Boukadoum, stressed Thursday during a phone conversations with EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, the need to strengthen dialogue and concentration between
Algeria and the European Union (EU) to develop a shared vision of the Association Agreement as well as all regional and international issues of common interest.
“I stress the need to strengthen dialogue and consultation between Algeria and the European Union to develop a common vision on the priorities of the Association Agreement and all regional and international issues of common interest,” wrote Boukadoum in a tweet on his official account.
The 12th session of the Association Council between Algeria and the EU was held in early December 2020 by video-conference, under the co-chairmanship of Boukadoum and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Joseph Borell.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Boukadoum said that “there is a willingness for dialogue” between Algeria and the EU on the Association Agreement that has linked the two parties since 2005, stressing that its revision must ensure a balance between the interests of both parties.
The Algerian negotiators “are aware of the shortcomings in the implementation of the Association Agreement, particularly in its trade aspect,” he said.
“When there is an imbalance we intervene to correct it,” he said, stressing the need to take all measures for the revision of this agreement on the basis of balance.
“Algeria is an extremely important country, being the gateway to Africa and Europe but also a center of stability” in the region, he said.
