ALGIERS-The African Union (AU) on Thursday approved Algeria’s candidacy for the post of non-permanent member of the United Nations (UN) Security Council for 2024-2025, Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum announced Friday.
“The 38th session of the Executive Council of the AU approved Algeria’s candidacy for the post of non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2024-2025,” Boukadoum tweeted Thursday evening.
The Executive Council stressed “the imperative attachment to the founding principles of the AU,” said Boukadoum.
Speaking at the 38th session of the AU Executive Council, Boukadoum said that “Algeria, firmly convinced of the principle of solidarity and equitable burden-sharing and concerned about the achievement of the objectives of the African continent, is committed to pay, on time, its financial contributions to the AU budget and the Peace Fund,” said a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This session was devoted to a series of reports, including that on the implementation of the common continental strategy to combat Covid-19, and presentations on the activities of various AU organs during the past year.
The Executive Council also reviewed the progress made in the implementation of AU structural reforms.
