ALGIERS-Algeria will chair the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council in June 2020 in Addis Ababa, announced the Foreign Affairs Ministry in a communiqué.
Algeria, faithful to its pan-African traditions, will work to advance the peace and security agenda in Africa, particularly in this critical period imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. It will examine with its African peers, members of the PSC, the appropriate measures to strengthen AU’s action and continental resilience within this framework,” the Foreign Ministry said.
In addition to following up hotbeds of crisis across the continent, “the Peace and Security Council will work, under the Algerian presidency, to align its activities with the AU roadmap to silence arms in Africa, the AU theme for the current year.”
Algeria was elected in February 2019, by an overwhelming majority, for a three-year term within the PSC, which it had already chaired last November, recalled the communiqué.
