ALGIERS- Algiers will host the 3rd preparatory meeting of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference for the African region from 18 to 21 June 2018,
said Saturday the Ministry of Post, Telecommunications, Technologies and Digital Technology.
This meeting takes place within the framework of the preparations for ITU Plenipotentiary Conference which will be held in Dubai from 29 October to 16 November 2018, and following the demand of the African Telecommunication Union (ATU), said the source.
This meeting, which comes to complete the two first preparatory meetings which were held in July 2017 in Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) and in April 2018 in Abuja (Nigeria) respectively, will have as a main objective “the formulation, in the final document, joint African proposals reflecting the new stakes of ICTs in Africa and mechanisms contributing to the preservation of the region’s interests.”
This preparatory meeting will be “a decisive phase in the coordination viewpoint process at the regional level in anticipation of the conference of plenipotentiaries which has a great importance for the future development of ICTs in Africa and constitutes a strategic stake for the strengthening of the African position and voice at the international level,” said the source.
The Plenipotentiary Conference is the supreme body of ITU which holds a meeting every four years.
On this occasion, the member States will decide the future role of the organization and determine its capacity to guide the development of information and communication technologies in the world.
This Conference also determines the Union’s general principles, adopts its strategic and financial plans for a period of dour years and elects the members of the Union’s management team as well as the member States of the Council and the members of the Radio Regulations Board.
