ALGIERS- Archeologist Toufik Hamoum was elected president of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Body (STAB) of 2001’s Convention of the United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the protection of underwater cultural heritage, following the 7th meeting of the States Parties, held on 20-21 June, said a communiqué of the Ministry of Culture.
Currently director general of the National Centre of Research and Archeology (CNRA) Toufik Hamoum is also a specialist in epigraphy.
He has represented Algeria, since 2017, within STAB which comprises twelve experts.
The 7th meeting assembled all the States Parties to the Convention, observer States, associated non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders to discuss the Convention’s prospects.
Adopted in 2001, the Convention of UNESCO of 2001, signed by 56 States, including Algeria, is an instrument on preservation practices of the global underwater cultural heritage.
