ALGIERS – The Algerian Red Crescent (CRA) shipped to Libya on Monday, following the instructions of President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, 100 tons of humanitarian aid consisting of food and medicines.
This third convoy in solidarity with the Libyan populations living in the border region of Ghadames departed from Mohamed-Boudiaf Olympic Complex (Algiers).
President of the Algerian Red Crescent Society Saïda Benhabiles stressed that the aid that is mostly food, water, medication and diapers, and electric generators, offered by the Algerian Government to the Libyan people will be shipped via a military airlift from Boufarik’s airport, where three cargo planes were mobilized by the command of the Algerian People’s National Army (ANP), towards In Amenas.
The Algerian Red Crescent, entrusted by the government with managing this humanitarian operation will subsequently deliver this aid to the Ghadames border post in coordination with the Libyan Red Crescent, added Benhabiles.
The CRA and the Libyan Red Crescent are bound by a partnership and cooperation agreement signed last week.
Benhabiles also said that the decision of the President of the Republic “shows the attachment of the Algerian people to the bonds of brotherhood with the Libyan people.”
This aid is exclusively intended for the Libyan populations living in the borders region of Ghadames, she added.
She also thanked President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for launching this initiative, in addition to the Algerian People’s National Armed Forces (ANP) for giving concrete expression to this humanitarian gesture. The chairman of the CRA has said that “this aid will relieve our Libyan brothers, who are currently going through tough times due to the crisis their country is undergoing”
Last month, Algeria has already organized two distinct humanitarian aid operations in the benefit of the Libyan people.
The first convoy, carrying 100 tons of humanitarian aid including, inter alia, food, medication, clothing, tents, and electronic generators left the airport of Djanet on January 4th.
Once arrived in Tin Alkoum border post, the aid, shipped by three military aircrafts had been handed over to the Libyan authorities who were in charge of its distribution to the local population.
On a visit to Algeria, the Libyan delegation, headed by the secretary general of the Libyan Red Crescent, Marie Al-Dressi signed a partnership agreement with the CRA. The second aid operation had been organized on January 13 as 70 tons of aid was shipped to Libya.
The agreement is intended to be a framework for bilateral cooperation, reflecting the commitment of the two parties to strengthening the partnership, particularly in the humanitarian field, through the exchange of experience and the coordination of programmes, based on their areas of expertise.
The Libyan Red Crescent secretary general expressed his gratitude to the President of the Republic and to Algeria for the humanitarian aid, highlighting “the historical relations which bind the two brotherly peoples.”
In a letter to the President of the Republic, the Libyan Red Crescent expressed its “warmest thanks” and expressed its “gratitude” to President Tebboune for the humanitarian aid sent to the Libyan people, which shows the “depth of ties between the two brotherly peoples”.
