Algerian experience in de-radicalization, reconciliation welcomed by Norwegian paper "The Local"

OSLO- Norwegian paper “The Local” published on 16 May an article under the heading “What the world can learn from Algeria’s anti-extremism strategy?,” analyzing the speech of Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdelkader Messahel,
made on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of Living Together in Peace.
In its analysis, the daily paper pointed out that May 16th which marks the International Day of Living Together in Peace, is an initiative introduced to the United Nations General Assembly by Algeria, based on its experience in national reconciliation.
This paper said that thanks to this commemoration the world can take advantage of the “unique and singular” experience of Algeria which was able to lead a transition of a terrorism-torn country to a concord, reconciliation and inclusion promoter country .
It shed light on the resilience of the Algerian people and security forces which allowed defeating terrorism and strengthening peace at a time when the focus of the international community was on Afghanistan and Iraq.
In this regard, the Norwegian paper emphasized the clear-sightedness of President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika who, since he was elected in 1999, had undertaken a comprehensive strategy aimed at stemming to violent extremism and healing a wounded nation.
“The Local” described the Algerian innovative model of restorative justice and the counterterrorism strategy as a model of reference worldwide based on a multi-dimensional approach in the fight against terrorism, associating diplomatic, legal, economic and military solutions supported by de-radicalization and rehabilitation programmes.
In this regard, the wrote that in the past few years, Algeria adopted several laws consolidating the social cohesion and the nations’ diversity, notably through the enshrinement of Tamazight as a national official language, the creation of the Algerian academy of Tamazight language and the promotion of women’s role in society.
