WASHINGTON- Algeria has won nine places in the World Bank’s Doing Business ranking for 2019, according to the new report of the international financial institution, published on Wednesday in Washington.
With 49.65 points out of a hundred, the Algerian economy leaped to the 157th place this year after being 166th in 2017.
The World Bank’s report which assesses the regulatory framework applied to small and medium-sized companies in 190 economies, examines notably the conditions in which the companies can launch their activities, having access to electricity, credit and pay their taxes.
The improvement in Algeria’s ranking results from two reforms in cross-border trade and electricity access.
Algeria ranked this year 106th in terms of connection to electricity with 69.58 out of a hundred.
The Algerian economy ranked also 76th in insolvency regulation, the 112th concerning the implementation of the agreements, 129th for obtaining building permit and 150th in terms of creating companies.
Algeria and the World Bank signed in 2014 a technical assistance agreement aimed at improving Algeria’s position in this ranking. As part of this effort, the government also created a committee devoted to the improvement of business climate.
