ALGIERS- Algeria will not import barely and hard wheat as a result of a good harvest in the 2018-2019 season, said Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fishing Cherif Omari,
pointing out that the quantities harvested so far exceed those of the last season.
“The Algerian market is well supplied with barely and hard wheat and all the indicators show that the country will not import these cereals,” said the minister on the sidelines of the installation Sunday of the inter-sectoral committee in charge of preparing and following the national reforestation campaign, according to a ministerial communiqué.
He added that he expects that the cereal production for the season 2018-2019 will reach “a historic level, never recorded since the independence,” underlining that the quantities that have been harvested so far exceed those of the last season, estimated at 27 million quintals.
The minister said that his sector is working on the elaboration of an action plan for the development of the cereal industry, notably soft wheat, which will be submitted to the government in accordance with the Prime minister’s instructions.
