ALGIERS- Algeria welcomes “the positive developments in the peace process in Mali,” which it was the leading mediator and Head of the Monitoring Committee of the Agreement signed by the Malian parties, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thursday in a statement.
Algeria was the leading mediator and is Head of the Monitoring Committee for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali, resulted from Algiers Process, the same source recalled.
In this regard, “Algeria welcomes the arrangement occurred last January 25 between the signatory movements on the question of representation within the monitoring bodies,” the statement said.
The same source stressed that “this new step forward on the path of national reconciliation in Mali, falls in line with the recommendations of the high level consultative meeting, extended to members of the Agreement Monitoring Committee, and which was held in Algiers on January 18, 2016 “.
“These recommendations encourage the parties to finalize without delay their consultations on the final composition of the monitoring bodies in the spirit of inclusiveness advocated by the Agreement and to consolidate the rapprochement effort initiated as part of the national reconciliation between all Malians,” noted the Foreign Ministry.
This new breakthrough, said the same source, “bodes well for sustained, integrated and diligent application of the commitments agreed by the signatory parties as it facilitates the outcome of discussions held on other issues, notably funding.”
Noting that “this progress is likely to further improve the functioning of bodies and mechanisms established by the Agreement, Algeria calls on the parties to continue to build on current appeasement dynamics to progress on the way of peace and reconciliation in the country,” the ministry concluded.
