ALGIERS- Algeria “closely follows” the situation in Niger and “strongly condemns” the acts of violence in the country, days after the publication of the presidential election results,
the ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thursday in a statement.
“Algeria closely follows the situation in the sister Republic of Niger, marked by scenes of violence following the publication of the results of the presidential election proclaimed by the Independent National Electoral Commission,” the statement said.
“It strongly condemns these acts of violence and calls for calm and reason,” the statement said.
Algeria also “encourages all political actors to abide by the results of the electoral process and to use legal channels and dialogue to express their grievances.”
“Algeria expresses its commitment to preserving the stability of this brother country and reiterates its willingness to work with the Nigerian authorities, to further boost the strong ties of brotherhood and cooperation and to promote stability and prosperity in the region,” the statement concluded.
The candidate of the Democracy and Socialism Party, Mohamed Bazoum, won the presidential election in Niger with 55.75% of votes, against his opponent Mahamane Ousmane (44.25%), Niger’s Independent National Electoral Commission announced Tuesday.
