ALGIERS- Algeria has ratified, through a presidential decree signed Thursday 13 October 2016 by President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Paris Climate Agreement.
The Agreement was adopted in late 2015 at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21).
Algeria, which co-chaired the international negotiation process that led to the adoption of the historic Agreement, was among the first countries to sign it during a high-level ceremony, held in New York on 22 April under the aegis of the UN Secretary General, in his capacity as the depositary of the Agreement.
Algeria has greatly contributed to the success of Paris Conference, by bridging positions of the Parties and reaching consensus on Paris Climate Agreement, which takes into consideration the interests and specificities of all Parties.
Therefore, Algeria’s ratification of the Agreement is a logical extension of its commitment as an active player in the international climate change negotiations since their launch in 1992 until their final stage in Paris.
