ALGIERS-Algeria plays a “leading role” in combating human trafficking in United Nations (UN) forums, said Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Algeria Eric Overvest.
“Algeria plays a leading role in human trafficking in United Nations (UN) forms,” said Overvest at a study-day themed “No to human trafficking” held by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
In this regard, Overvest expressed UN’s recognition to key stakeholders for their “crucial and fundamental” role in combating human trafficking, notably the National Gendarmerie and Police, magistrates, customs, solidarity institutions and doctors.
“Each in his respective mission, you reflect the efforts and deep commitment of Algeria to combating human trafficking and protecting the victims of this horrible crime,” said the UN official.
Chairperson of the National Body for the Protection and Promotion of Children (ONPPE) Meriem Chorfi focused on the need to coordinate and multiply international efforts to combat any form of human trafficking.
“This scourge is spreading and has no border or religion. It is an abject crime based on the exploitation of the weakest ones, the vast majority of whom are women and children,” Chorfi deplored.
A counseling service has been set up to warn against children rights violations, which received nearly half a million calls for information and orientation between January and 26 July.
