ALGIERS- Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel and his Dutch counterpart Stef Blok expressed, Wednesday in Algiers, their satisfaction at the convergence of views and objectives of the two countries regarding regional and international issues.
“As regards the movement of persons, I am pleased with what our two countries have done to address the issue of illegal migration, with the spirit of responsibility and mutual assistance,” said Messahel in his opening address at the 3rd session of Algeria-Netherlands Joint Committee on Economic and Technology Cooperation, which he co-chaired with his Dutch counterpart.
In this regard, he hailed cooperation between the two countries and stressed the need to adopt measures on facilitation of visa procedures.
“It is clear that the development of our trade, economic and cultural cooperation requires greater facilitation of movement of persons between our two countries,” he added.
As regards international issues, Messahel expressed satisfaction at the convergence of views, approaches and objectives on many regional and international political issues.
“My country continues to contribute for the restoration of peace and stability in the Sahel region (…) we remain mobilized, with our Malian friends, to implement the commitments made in the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali, stemming from Algiers process, with the preservation of the independence, unity and territorial integrity of this country,” he said.
“Our two countries, which are perfectly aware of the threat posed to our sub-region due to the instability in Libya, recommend an inclusive Libyan political solution, and provide their support to the praiseworthy efforts of the United Nations Special Envoy for Libya, Ghassan Salame, to rebuild the Libyan State and establish a new era of peace while preserving the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of this neighbouring country, without any foreign interference,” stressed Messahel.
The Foreign minister added “I know that your country remains convinced, as does my country, that the oldest conflict in the region regarding the denial of Palestinian people’s right to freedom and independence, requires a just, comprehensive and lasting peace on the basis of the two-State solution and in accordance with the international law and resolutions.”
As regards the Western Sahara conflict, he said that our two countries work for a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution, which would allow the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination in accordance with the UN principles and Charter.
Messahel expressed Algeria’s readiness to share its experience in countering violent extremism and radicalization.
As for the issue of illegal migration, he said that Algeria, which used to be a transit country, has become a destination country for illegal immigrants.
