ALGIERS- Algeria and the European Union held Monday, by video link, their 12th session of the Association Council, centered on the bilateral relations and the prospects of the association
agreement between the two sides since 2005.
The session was co-chaired by Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Joseph Borell.
Signed in 2002, but entered into force in 2005, the Algeria-EU Association Agreement provides for the establishment of a free trade area in 2017, which has been postponed to September 2020.
Algeria has asked for the revision of the agreement to preserve its national production but without giving up this framework of association.
In September, the president of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, said Algeria would “conduct a review of the timetable for tariff dismantling according to its economic interests.”
Algerian foreign policy chief, Sabri Boukadoum, said in September that Algeria’s relations with its strategic partners will be assessed with pragmatism to preserve the country’s interests.
“Giving priority to efficiency rather than polemic and publicity effects,” he stressed.
“Relations with Algeria’s strategic partners will be assessed to make the country a balancing power,” the minister said in an interview with El Djeich magazine.
