ALGIERS-Algeria has been elected as member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) under the African group with 185 votes out of 188, the Foreign Affairs Ministry announced Sunday in a statement.
«On 21 October 2015, Algeria has been brilliantly elected at the Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) with 185 votes among the 188 present voting members. The election of 18 new members for a three-year term (2016-2018) took place at the General Assembly. The term of the new members will enter into force as from 1 January 2016,” the source said.
Algeria, which stood in election among the African group, “achieved the best score among the candidates of the 5 regional groups,” the ministry added, stressing that this election “highlights Algeria’s commitment towards issues related to economy, cooperation and development.”
The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is comprised of 54 UN member states elected by the General Assembly for overlapping three-year terms.
This body is in charge of examining international economic social, cultural, sustainable development and other related fields.
At the 2005 World Summit, Heads of State and Government tasked ECOSOC to conduct annual ministerial reviews and to hold a biennial forum for cooperation in development.
The Council is also expected to play a key role in the implementation of Agenda 2030, adopted at the World Summit on Post-2015 Development held last on September in New York.
