ALGIERS- The Director General of the Organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons (OPCW) Fernando Arias emphasized on Tuesday Algeria’s role in promoting “peace and stability” in the region.
“I came to Algeria to recognize the value of the Algerian diplomacy, the stabilization role this country is assuming in North Africa and the example it gives to the rest of the world. In the international organizations, I also see Algeria as a country of peace, stability, endowed with wisdom to resolve the problems,” Arias told the press following his meeting with Foreign Minister, Abdelkader Messahel.
Arias, elected last July as OPCW director General has chosen Algeria for his first visit. He said that the organization “has managed to destroy almost 97% of the world’s declared chemical weapons, which has now the great challenge of ensuring the non-re-emergence of chemical weapons and controlling the manufacture of chemicals around the world, to ensure that they are used for peace purposes and that they do not fall into the hands of terrorist groups.”
“We are surrounded by chemicals in our daily lives and the other goal of the OPCW is to ensure that these products are used for the benefit of the society and that the collateral effects such as the fertilizers, insecticides and cleaning products have no negative effects on health and the environment,” he added.
For his part, Messahel said that Algeria is willing to “fully and completely” cooperate with the OPCW.
During his visit, Arias has “visited certain Algerian facilities that handle issues related to the prohibition of the use of chemical weapons,” added Messahel.
