Algeria-Canada sign partnership agreement to execute pilot project of integrated waste management

ALGIERS- The National Agency of Waste (AND) and the public company Sopte, subsidiary of the group Divindus, signed Wednesday, in Algiers,
a partnership agreement with a Canadian consortium (Sherbrooke OEM Ltd) for the execution of a pilot project on the integrated management of household and similar waste with low greenhouse gas emissions.
The agreement was signed by AND’s Director General Mohamed Karim Ouamane, the Chief Executive Officer of Divindus group Fourat Mahdjoub, Sherbrooke OEM’s head Alain Brasseur, President of Global green links (GCL) Smail Ouicher, the head of Lakson International Development (LID) Mohamed Lakhmiri, in the presence of Minister of Environment and Renewable Energies Fatima Zahra Zerouati and Secretary General of Ministry of Industry and Mining Khireddine Medjoubi as well as Canada’s ambassador to Algeria Patricia McCullagh.
This project aims at recycling household waste and poultry droppings and will allow producing and marketing organic fertilizers, electricity (for local energy needs) and non-organic raw materials recovered from sorting.
The production units will be set up in the provinces of Constantine and Setif, while marketing units will be established in El Oued and Biskra.
More than 500 tons/day of household and similar waste and 100 tons/day of poultry droppings will be processed through a recent patented technology from Canada.
Budgeted at €35 million (70% for the Algerian side and 30% for the Canadian side), this project will be executed as from 2019 over a period of 18 to 24 months.
