ALGIERS – Algeria is following with “particular attention” developments in Sudan and calls for “peaceful and smooth transition of power in accordance with the will of the Sudanese people and their legitimate aspirations,”
said Friday, a statement from Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Confident in the capacity of this brother country to surmount this decisive situation while preserving its security and integrity, Algeria remains convinced that the Sudanese people will be able to achieve their hopes for a better future within the framework of freedom and democracy, said the ministry.
Calling for “a peaceful and smooth transition of power in accordance with the willingness of the Sudanese people and their legitimate aspirations,” the Foreign Ministry recalled in its statement “the historically solid relations” linking Algeria and Sudan, insisting on the need “to preserve the stability and security of this country”.
Sudan’s Defense Minister Awad Ahmed Benawf announced on Thursday the establishment of a military council to lead a two-year transition, adding that the former Head of State Omar al Bachir is being detained in a safe place”.
He also announced the suspension of the Constitution and declared a state of emergency for a period of three months.
These political changes occurred as a result of popular demonstrations staged by Sudanese for more than three months to express socio-economic demands.
