NEW YORK (United Nations)-Algeria has been brilliantly elected on Tuesday as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the period 2023-2025,
in recognition of its role as a pivotal country in the region that seeks to promote the principles and values of human rights throughout the world.
Algeria won 178 votes in the ballot that took place in New York at the 17th plenary session of the UN General Assembly. Fourteen (14) new countries will join this intergovernmental body responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights in the world.
This UN body is made up of 47 members elected for a three-year term, according to a geographical distribution that gives 13 seats to the African States, 13 seats to the Asia-Pacific States, 8 seats to Latin American and the Caribbean States, 7 seats to Western European and other States, and 6 seats to the Eastern European States.
Algeria’s accession to the UNHRC from January 1, 2023 for the third time since the creation of this body in 2006 will not only enable it to work for the promotion and protection of human rights around the world but also confirm its role among nations.
Besides, this accession will boost Algeria’s candidacy for a seat as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period 2024-2025.
