SAINT PETERSBURG (Russia)- Speaker of the Council of the Nation (Upper House of Parliament) Abdelkader Bensalah has reiterated, Sunday in Russia’s Saint Petersburg, Algeria’s commitment to supporting political settlement of crises and conflicts and people’s right to self-determination.
“True to its principles, our country has always called for political solution to conflicts in Libya, Mali, Syria and Yemen,” said Bensalah in his address at the 137thAssembly of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
“Algeria is firmly convinced that the solution to the Western Sahara conflict lies in allowing Sahrawi people exercise their right to self-determination, in accordance with the international law,” he stressed.
The Upper House’s speaker also reiterated Algeria’s support to the Palestinian people in their struggle to recover their national rights and establish an independent State with Al-Quds as its capital.
“The international community must take urgent and effective actions to end the tragedy of Rohingya Muslims,” he added.
Bensalah underlined the urgent need to encourage interreligious and interethnic dialogue to “ensure the progress of peoples and eradicate all forms of extremism, fanaticism and violence.”
“The 137th IPU Assembly is an opportunity that we should seize to contribute to enriching the debate on the promotion of cultural pluralism and peace through interreligious and interethnic dialogue and exchanging views on other issues in order to clarify our positions,” he said.
The Upper House’s speaker added that the world is witnessing an outburst of tensions and insecurity in some regions in Africa and the Middle East.
“This situation has resulted from endogenous and exogenous factors that have impeded the development of these regions as well as the process of building democracy,” he said.
Bensalah stressed that Algeria “has always contributed to establishing peace and finding solutions to conflicts in the region, through building strong partnership and constructive cooperation, with a view to ensuring the economic development and directing efforts towards the achievement of the third millennium development goals.”
“Algeria has promoted the principle of tolerance within the society by the adoption of the charter for peace and national reconciliation and all related measures, initiated by President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika,” he recalled.
As regards the recent terrorist attacks in several regions around the world, he said “this international scourge (terrorism) knows no border and no culture. It is an established fact that Algeria has been warning about since 1990s and its eradication has become an obligation for all countries,” he concluded.
