ALGIERS- Algeria will host, during the first half of 2018, a meeting of the African Group of the International Association of Judges (IAJ),
which will focus on the corruption in the judiciary and the independence of the magistracy in accordance with the compendium of the ethical obligations of judges, recently approved, said Saturday the head of the National Association of Judges (SNM) Aidouni Djamel in a communiqué.
Speaking at the opening of the ordinary session of SNM’s National Council, Aidouni announced that the meeting of the African group of the International Association of Judges will be held in Algiers in the Spring of 2018 and that Morocco will host, in the same year, the 61st Congress of the International Association of Judges.
Underlining that these two meetings will mainly focus on the independence of the magistracy and corruption in the judiciary, he added that the two themes are in the heart of the compendium of the ethical obligations of judges, approved by IAJ in its last congress in Santiago, Chile, and addressed to the United Nations, “to be, in the future, mandatory for all the member countries.”
Concerning Algeria, Aidouni underlined that the magistracy “is an independent authority which carries out its missions as part of the law and passes sentences on behalf of the Algerian people,” in the light of the guarantees of protecting rights and freedoms as well as principles and objectives of reforms initiated by President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika, enshrined by a deep revision of the justice sector.
