ALGIERS- Deputy Speaker of the People’s National Assembly (Lower House of Parliament) Abdelkader Hadjoudj underlined the need for Mediterranean countries to combine efforts to counter terrorism.
In his address at the 5th Summit of Speakers of Parliaments of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM) in Egypt’s Cairo, Hadjoudj stressed the need for the countries of the region to “join efforts to combat terrorism and extremism, in all its forms, through a comprehensive strategy to eradicate them,” said Sunday the Lower House in a communiqué.
Hadjoudj said that this strategy should allow drying up all funding sources of terrorism and addressing its deep roots, through the promotion of the principle of moderation, dialogue and the fight against extremist ideology.
“Terrorism is not linked to any religion, culture or nation. It is a global and a cross-border challenge,” he added.
The Lower House’s deputy speaker recalled “Algeria’s suffering during the 1990s because of unprecedented barbaric terrorism.”
In this regard, Hadjoudj said that thanks to “the courage of Algerian people, who remained committed to the values of the Republic, and the huge sacrifices of the People’s National Army, all security institutions and citizens who joined self-defence groups, Algeria has managed to eradicate the scourge of terrorism.”
He added that the wise initiatives of President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika under the Law on Civil Concord in 1999 and the Charter for Peace and National Reconciliation in 2005, “contributed to the eradication of terrorism and extremism in all its forms.”
