COPENHAGEN-Speaking at a conference held Thursday at the Royal Danish Defence College (Copenhagen), Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel stressed that Algeria was a “textbook case” of national reconciliation.
“The national reconciliation policy, initiated by President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika and implemented under his leadership with the massive support of the entire Algerian people, sanctifies human life and places it above all other considerations. This policy is also based on the fundamental values of tolerance, dialogue, living together in peace, mutual acceptance and respect for difference,” said Messahel.
In the same vein, the FM affirmed that “social justice reduces vulnerabilities and margins of exposure to arguments developed and heavily exploited by ideologues and recruiters of extremist and terrorist groups.”
Algeria’s top diplomat also stated that “the fight against violent extremism and terrorism consists in depriving terrorism and violent extremism supporters of the factors that put down their roots, and the way they operate politically and socio-economically”.
“This is the path Algeria has taken since President Abdelaziz Bouteflika took office in 1999,” recalled Messahel.
Through peaceful means and starting from the conviction that the path of legal repression necessarily has its limits, Algeria quickly healed the wounds of the Black Decade and mobilized the entire people around the sole goal that is worth efforts, namely the development of the country and the well-being of all its citizens, without exception or exclusion, in accordance with the Constitution and the laws of the Republic,” Messahel stressed.
Recalling Algeria’s initiative adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, which consists in proclaiming 16 May each year the International Day for Living Together in Peace, Messahel said that Algeria was “working today to promote and entrench in the minds and behaviour of citizens and institutions the values and virtues of living together in peace.”
