ALGIERS- The Algerian government on Wednesday “totally” rejected and “in detail” the assertions of UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants Felipe Gonzalez Morales,
expressing its “astonishment” at the content of his press conference following his visit to Niger.
“The Algerian government had noted with astonishment the content of the press conference of Felipe Gonzalez Morales, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights of Migrants, following his visit to Niger,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a communiqué.
In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that the Algerian government “totally rejects and in detail the assertions of the latter who didn’t only go beyond the limits of his mandate but believed the allegations of people who were escorted back to the borders for their illegal stay.”
According to the Ministry “the Algerian government asked for explanations from the representative of the international Organization for Migration (IOM) whose office in Niger has changed its vocation to become a vehicle for propaganda fueling for months a disinformation campaign against Algeria.”
“The Algerian government underlines that the operations of escorting illegal migrants to the borders will continue. They are taking place with respect for human dignity, pursuant to the Republic’s laws, in compliance with the ratified international provisions and conventions and in accordance with the bilateral readmission agreements,” added the source.
“Algeria will continue, in consultations with the countries of origin and of transit, to conduct an implacable struggle against human trafficking and smuggling networks as part of the global fight against transnational organized crime,” concluded the communiqué.
