ADDIS-ABABA (Ethiopia) – Algeria which has always “upheld” pan-Africanism, plays a “fundamental” role in the preservation of peace in the African continent, Ibrahim Assane Mayaki,
the Executive Secretary of the New Partnership for Africa (NEPAD).
“Algeria plays a fundamental role in preserving peace in the African continent and has always upheld the Pan-Africanism,” he told the press on the sidelines of the African Union Summit in Addis-Ababa.
The Nepad Executive Secretary praised the initiatives undertaken by Algeria to help its neighboring countries.
The former prime minister of Niger recalled Algeria’s efforts to support Niger, notably by taking the decision to clear its debt.
As for him, the African Union Peace and Security Commissioner (CPS) Smaïl Chergui, also welcomed the efforts of Algeria in the resolution of conflicts in the continent.
“When the African Union forces were deployed for the first time in 2017 in Somalia, all the s contingents were transported in Algerian plants,” Chergui said on the sidelines of the official launch of the AU Peace Fund.
This “remarkable and discreet” contribution of Algeria, “determined to enhance peace in Africa, has left its mark in several regions of the continent, like in the Sahel,” he said.
“In the Security and Peace Council, we are witnesses of Algeria’s contribution to building the capacity of many African states in several areas,” he added.
