Algeria-EU Association Council: Implementation of partnership priorities high on agenda
APS : SUNDAY 13 MAY 2018
BRUSSELS- The eleventh session of Algeria-European Union Association Council, to be held Monday in Brussels, will focus on the implementation of the partnership’s priorities, adopted during the previous session.
The works of the Council, the highest authority of consultation and political dialogue established under Algeria-EU Association Agreement, will be co-chaired by Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.
During the session, the two sides will examine cooperation and partnership between Algeria and the EU and their prospects, as well as means to further strengthen them in the different fields covered by the Agreement.
The session will be held in the wake of the adoption by the two sides of common partnership priorities under the new European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) and the outcomes of joint assessment of the Association Agreement implementation.
These partnership priority actions, until 2020, have been jointly defined in accordance with the new ENP and the EU strategy for foreign and security policy.
They encompass political dialogue, governance, the rule of law, the promotion of fundamental rights, cooperation, socioeconomic development, trading, energy issues, environment and sustainable development, strategic and security dialogue, human dimension, inter-cultural and inter-religious dialogue, migration and mobility.
Some of these priority actions will be covered by technical and financial cooperation, which will be implemented as part of the 2018-2020 financial programme.
Algeria and the EU have finalized the 2018-2020 Single Support Framework, which is due to be adopted Monday during the Association Council’s meeting.
These priority actions encompass support to the governance, diversification and competitiveness of economy, local inclusive and sustainable development, participatory democracy, energy and environment.
It will also provide for the strengthening of capacities of institutions and civil society, with a special attention to young people.
