ALGIERS-Algeria has been elected member of the Council of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) for a two-year term, announced Sunday the Ministry of Energy Transition and Renewable Energy in a communiqué.
This election to the Council of IRENA took place at the 11th virtual session of the General Assembly of the Agency held on 18-21 January 2021, said the source.
Algeria was elected to sit on the Council of the Agency for a two-year term (2021-2021) as representative of the Africa Group and North Africa subgroup.
The Council, composed of 21 members, is responsible for facilitating cooperation among members, overseeing the work programme and budget of the Agency, as well as its adoption by the General Assembly, which includes 163 members and 21 States in the process of accession.
Algeria took part in the GA with a delegation composed of representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Energy Transition and Renewable Energy, and Energy.
It was led by the Minister of Energy Transition and Renewable Energy Professor Chems Eddine Chitour.
During this Assembly, Chitour, quoted in the press release, stressed “the urgency of sustainable recovery after Covid-19 and the undeniable role of renewable energy in achieving green growth which requires increased efforts to advance the 2030 Global Agenda for Sustainable Development.”
He also emphasized “Algeria’s proactive policy in favor of a gradual, just and equitable energy transition based on a new energy model, the development of renewable energy coupled with energy efficiency and efforts to achieve global goals in terms of sustainable development and fight against climate change.”
“Developing countries should benefit from investment and financial assistance in the field of renewable energy,” said the minister.
