ALGIERS-Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fishing, Cherif Omari on Monday chaired the signing ceremony of the second Country Programming Framework (CPF) between Algeria and the Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO).
The CPF requires a budget worth US$10 million and defines the propriety cooperation programmes between the FAO and Algeria in 2019-2022 in line with the sustainable development programme by 2030.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Omari said that the programme sought to achieve sustainable development through the development of agriculture, production increase and sustainable agricultural productivity.
The project will also focus on improving agricultural value chains and the sustainability of natural resources and fisheries while attaching a particular interest to vulnerable regions in the light of climate changes, he continued.
The programme is aimed at supporting domestic monitoring resources and supporting the efforts of farmers, fishermen and traders under international commitments to ensure food security and reduce poverty, stated Omari.
Hailing Algeria’s role and its commitments to the sustainable development of environmentally sound agriculture through the achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MGDs) by 2030, the minister referred to “the consolidation of ongoing cooperation in order to back professional, technical and scientific potential for a better exploitation of wealth, lands and forests.
In this regard, he recalled Algeria’s “pioneering” in combating desertification through the green dam project, production systems modernization and the rational exploitation of resources.
For his part, FAO Representative in Algeria, Nabil Assad underlined the importance of food security and food sovereignty of the countries threatened by war and pollution, which have resulted in the waste of energy and water resources.
Welcoming FAO’s strategic support to Algeria’s development process and food security efforts, Assaf said that Algeria had the human and natural resources that enable it to become one of the most developed countries in terms of agriculture in the world.
