Tips for Visitors

 

  • Check if you need a visa to enter Bulgaria. You can do so on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here: http://www.mfa.bg/en/pages/109/index.html
  • The currency used in Bulgaria is BGN (lev). It is safe to exchange money in banks and licensed exchange offices. Be careful when exchanging money and make note of the exchange rate.
  • Most hotels, restaurants and shops in Sofia accept credit cards, but the case is different in smaller cities and the rural areas. Always have a safe amount of cash with you.
  • There are 4 international airports in the country – Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas.
  • Bulgaria is located in the Eastern European Time Zone (GMT +2).
  • The entire territory of the country is covered by the mobile networks of the three operators – Vivacom, Telenor and M-tel. They use  GSM 900/1800 and support 2G and 3G.
  • The electric voltage used is 220 V, 50 Hz.
  • The climate in Bulgaria differs greatly throughout the year. The best months for skiing are December, January, February and sometimes March. The best months for visiting the Black Sea beaches are June, July, August and sometimes September.
  • When using taxis, always pay attention to the provided prices. They should be printed on the windows of the back doors and the dashboard of the car. Prices should be around 0.70-0.90 BGN.
  • Be aware that Bulgarian people nod for ‘no’ and shake their heads for ‘yes’.
