ALGIERS – Germany “contribute” to the Algerian economy diversification process, said Monday in Algiers German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, Merkel said that Algeria, which revenues depend mainly on hydrocarbons, had to go through a “difficult road” in recent years, due to the decline in oil prices.
The two countries had sealed partnership in the field of energy, she said, adding that Algeria and Germany could “still make more progress.”

According to her, the Algerian-German partnership requires an “open civil society” so that the young people from both countries “can bring their creativity.”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel began Monday a one-day official visit to Algeria at the invitation of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
