SAKIET SIDI YOUCEF (Tunisia)-Premier Ahmed Ouyahia on Thursday announced that Algeria would supply Tunisia with natural gas soon.
“By the end of 2018, Algeria will supply four Tunisian border regions including Sakiet Sidi Youcef with natural gas,” said Ouyahia in a statement after a joint press conference with his Tunisian counterpart Youcef Chahed on the occasion of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the bombing of Sakiet Sidi Youcef by the colonial army.
Trade exchanges between Algeria and Tunisia hit US2 billion annually. We need some more time to raise all cooperation fields to “the level of both peoples’ aspirations,” said Ouyahia.
For his part, the Tunisian Prime Minister stated that the events of Sakiet Sidi Youcef had united the two peoples and this opportunity was seized today to discuss “important issues including economic cooperation, which has not yet reached the level of bilateral political cooperation.”
Stressing the importance of developing border regions between the two countries, Chahed announced a project to set up committees that meet in border provinces with potential in various fields including agriculture and tourism.
The Tunisian PM said today’s talks in the presence of the Tunisian Minister of Defence and Algerian and Tunisian Interior Ministers also focused on security coordination in the fight against terrorism, a common challenge to both countries.
He also underlined the “need to promote relations between the two countries and think about creating free trade zones”.
