ALGIERS- Minister of Maghreb Affairs, African Union and Arab League Abdelkader Messahel has received, Wednesday in Algiers, the Undersecretary of State at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Vincenzo Amendola.
“The meeting focused mainly on bilateral cooperation, particularly as regards the forthcoming session of the Algerian-Italian High Joint Commission, scheduled for autumn, and which would be preceded by a meeting of the follow-up committee in Rome,” Messahel told the press following his discussions with Amendola.
Rome’s meeting aims at assessing the implementation of the decisions made during the visit paid by Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal to Italy, he added.
Messahel also underlined the “longstanding relations” between the two countries, adding “Italy is a major partner, which has accompanied Algeria in its most difficult periods, especially during the National Liberation War.”
“Algeria and Italy has developed strong relations, especially in the economic field, with a trade volume of US$10 billion,” he said, expressing the two countries’ willingness to broaden and strengthen their cooperation.
“We seek, given the capacities of the two countries and their good political relations, to further strengthen our economic cooperation,” said Messahel.
Algeria and Italy “can play a role in bridging the African and European continents,” he added.
For his part, Amendola hailed the “strong relations” between the two countries, marked by the prospects for mutually beneficial joint projects.
He added that the two countries share the same vision on many issues.
The Italian official said that the discussions focused also on security in the region, particularly the Libyan conflict and means to find a solution to the crisis shaking this country.
